Hyundai Elantra GT sunroof may close on obstacles

NHTSA campaign 18V891000 · Reported 2018-12-14 · Hyundai Motor America

medium How serious is it? About this label

If the sunroof does not detect an obstacle while closing and then retract, there could be an increased risk of injury. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

The motor for the large glass panoramic sunroof on these Hyundai Elantra GT models may have the wrong software loaded. A sunroof is supposed to sense when something is in the way as it closes and then stop and pull back. With the wrong programming, it may not notice an obstacle and can keep closing on a hand, an arm, or a child's head. The dealer will inspect the sunroof and replace it if needed.

What you should do

2. Contact a Hyundai dealer, or Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460, and mention recall 179.
3. Have the panoramic sunroof inspected and, if necessary, replaced free of charge.
