This is a labeling problem rather than a mechanical failure, and the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, but missing guidance on proper restraint use can mean a higher chance of injury in a crash.

What's wrong, in plain English

On some 2019 BMW X5 models, the sun visor above the driver's or front passenger's seat has the wrong airbag warning label printed on it, or no label at all. That label is the sticker that tells you how to sit and buckle up safely around a front airbag, including where children should ride. Nothing mechanical is broken on the car, but the safety information you are supposed to see is wrong or missing. A dealer will check both visors and replace them if needed.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your X5 is included. 2. Call your BMW dealer, or BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417, and schedule the visor inspection. 3. Have the dealer replace the visors if needed — the repair is free.

Summary
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2019 BMW X5 xDrive40i and X5 xDrive50i vehicles. The driver and/or passenger sun visor may have an incorrect air bag warning label, or the label may be missing. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant crash protection."
Safety risk
Without a label that shows the proper restraint usage guidelines, the occupants may have an increased risk of injury in the event of a crash.
Remedy
BMW notified owners, and dealers will inspect the driver and passenger sun visor, replacing the visors as necessary, free of charge. The recall began January 4, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
