Cadillac CTS and other GM cars may lose power steering

NHTSA campaign 19V086000 · Reported 2019-02-07 · General Motors LLC

high How serious is it? About this label

Losing steering assist without warning is serious and can lead to a crash; the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, but be aware the steering could get heavy at any time until it is fixed.

What's wrong, in plain English

The electric system that helps you turn the steering wheel can stop working on these cars. If it does, the wheel does not lock up, but it suddenly becomes much heavier and harder to turn — most noticeably at low speeds, like parking, turning into a driveway, or pulling through an intersection. A driver caught off guard by the sudden extra effort may not steer where they intended. The dealer replaces the power steering gear assembly to correct it.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your car is included. 2. Contact your GM dealer to schedule the repair, referring to recall number N182182760. 3. Have the power steering gear assembly replaced — the repair is free.
