A wheel coming off while driving can cause a crash, and the notice does not tell owners to stop driving the vehicle.

What's wrong, in plain English

The bolts holding the wheels on the left side of the vehicle may not have been tightened enough at the factory, and they can work loose as you drive. If they loosen far enough, a wheel can come off the vehicle while you are on the road. The dealer will replace the left side wheel bolts with new ones and tighten them properly. There is no charge to you for the parts or the work. BMW is contacting owners of the affected vehicles directly.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is affected. 2. Contact your BMW dealer or BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 to schedule the work. 3. Have the left side wheel bolts replaced and tightened — free of charge.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2019 X5 xDrive50i and X7 xDrive40i vehicles. The left side wheel bolts may have been insufficiently tightened and may loosen over time.
Safety risk
Loose bolts may allow a wheel to detach from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace and tighten the left side wheel bolts, free of charge. The recall began July 16, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
