MINI Cooper hardtops may be missing rear crash padding

NHTSA campaign 19V634000 · Reported 2019-08-28 · BMW of North America, LLC

medium How serious is it? About this label

Moderate — it does not make a crash more likely and the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, but rear passengers are less protected in a side crash until the pads are installed.

What's wrong, in plain English

These MINI Hardtops may have left the factory missing a crash pad behind the rear side trim panels. That pad is a block of padding built into the body that soaks up some of the force if another vehicle hits the side of your car. Without it, anyone sitting in the back seat is more likely to be hurt in a side-impact crash. The car drives normally and nothing will feel wrong. MINI dealers will install the missing pads for free.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your MINI is on the list.
2. Book the free crash pad installation at a MINI dealer.
3. Call MINI customer service at 1-866-825-1525 if you have questions or did not receive a letter.
