This is a moderate concern rather than an emergency: a missing brake light or a loose piece on the road raises the chance of a crash, but the notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

On certain 2014-2019 BMW M6 Gran Coupe cars, the third brake light — the extra brake light mounted high up, separate from the two taillights — may work loose. If it loosens enough, it can come off the car entirely. Once it is gone, drivers behind you lose one of the lights that warns them you are braking. The piece can also land on the road and become an obstacle for other drivers.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your M6 is included.
2. Contact your BMW dealer to book the repair, or call BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
3. Have the dealer inspect the third brake light and secure it with new fasteners, or replace it if it is missing or damaged — free of charge.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2014-2019 M6 Gran Coupe vehicles. The third brake light may become loose, possibly allowing the light to detach from the vehicle.
Safety risk
If the third brake light detaches from the vehicle, it would no longer provide the required lighting to following traffic, or it may become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the third brake light and properly secure it with new fasteners. If the third brake light detached from the vehicle and is damaged, it will be replaced. All repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began April 17, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
