BMW X6 rear spoiler may detach while driving

NHTSA campaign 20V095000 · Reported 2020-02-19 · BMW of North America, LLC

medium How serious is it? About this label

This is a moderate concern: a spoiler coming loose on the road raises the risk of a crash for you or drivers behind you, but the notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

Certain 2020 BMW X6 models — the sDrive40i, xDrive40i, and xDrive50i — may have a rear spoiler that can come off the vehicle. The spoiler is the trim piece mounted at the back of the roof or tailgate. If it separates while you are driving, it can fall onto the road behind you, where it becomes an obstacle for other drivers. BMW dealers will look at the spoiler and replace it if needed.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your 2020 X6 is included.
2. Contact your BMW dealer to schedule an inspection, or call BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
3. Have the dealer inspect the rear spoiler and replace it if necessary — free of charge.
