A tire that loses pressure rapidly at speed can take away your control with no warning, so any affected vehicle that has not had its tires replaced should be dealt with before driving further, though the notice does not order owners to park the vehicle.

What's wrong, in plain English

Some Pirelli tires fitted to these X5 and X6 models were built with a damaged layer inside. The damage can let a tire lose air very quickly while you are driving, which can make the vehicle hard to steer and control. BMW says it already called every affected owner by phone and those vehicles have had the tires replaced, so no letters were mailed. The replacement tires cost the owner nothing.

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see whether your X5 or X6 is affected — BMW did not mail owner letters for this recall.
2. If your vehicle is listed and you are not sure the tires were already changed, call BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or your dealer.
3. Have the dealer replace the affected tires; the replacement is free.

Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2021 X6 (sDrive40i, xDrive40i and M50i) and X5 (sDrive40i, xDrive40i and M50i) vehicles equipped with certain Pirelli tires. The tires may have a damaged inner layer, possibly resulting in a rapid loss of pressure while the vehicle is moving.
Safety risk: A rapid loss of tire pressure while the vehicle is moving can affect vehicle handling and control, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: BMW has notified all of the affected owners, and dealers will replace the defective tires, free of charge. BMW has contacted owners by telephone and those owners have had their cars remedied. Owner notification letters will not be sent. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
