BMW X6 roof spoiler may come loose and detach

NHTSA campaign 20V484000 · Reported 2020-08-14 · BMW of North America, LLC

high How serious is it? About this label

Serious: the notice says the spoiler can detach while driving and become a road hazard that could cause a crash or injure people nearby, but owners are not told to stop driving the vehicle.

What's wrong, in plain English

The spoiler at the back of the roof may not be bonded tightly to the plate that holds it onto the car. Over time it can work loose and fly off while you are driving. A part coming off at speed turns into an obstacle in the road: it can hit another vehicle, injure someone standing near the roadway, or cause another driver to crash. Dealers will inspect the spoiler and replace it if necessary, free of charge.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see whether your X6 falls under recall 20V484000.
2. Call BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or your BMW dealer and schedule the free inspection, which includes replacement if the spoiler is not properly bonded.
3. Before the appointment, mention any rattling or movement you have noticed from the rear roof area, and avoid sustained high-speed driving if you have.
