BMW X5 and X7 rear head restraints may detach

NHTSA campaign 21V156000 · Reported 2021-03-10 · BMW of North America, LLC

medium How serious is it? About this label

In the event of a crash, the head restraints could detach, and increase the risk of injury. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

The head restraints — the padded headrests on top of the seats — on the two outer seats in the second row may be the wrong type for these vehicles. Because they are not the right parts, they could come loose and detach in a crash, leaving a passenger's head and neck unprotected at the moment they need that support most. They cause no trouble in normal driving. A dealer will look at the head restraints and swap in the correct ones if yours are wrong.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your X5 or X7 is included in campaign 21V156000.
2. Call your BMW dealer, or BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417, to arrange the inspection.
3. Have the second-row head restraints inspected and replaced if needed — free of charge.
