Honda CB500X and CBR500R motorcycles may leak brake fluid

NHTSA campaign 21V690000 · Reported 2021-09-02 · Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)

high How serious is it? About this label

Weakened brakes on a motorcycle are a serious crash risk; the notice does not tell riders to park the bike, but have it inspected before riding much further.

What's wrong, in plain English

These motorcycles have an anti-lock braking part that had too much grease packed into it. Over time that extra grease can pick up dirt and grit, and the debris can get caught in a small valve inside. When the valve is held open by debris, brake fluid can leak out. Losing brake fluid means the brakes may not work as well as they should, and stopping the bike can take longer than you expect.
