Losing power without warning on a motorcycle can cause a crash or injury, though the notice does not tell riders to stop riding.

What's wrong, in plain English

Certain 2020-2021 Honda CRF1100 Africa Twin motorcycles with the automatic dual-clutch transmission have a software fault in the engine control computer. The fault can cut the communication link between the bike's electronic parts and release the clutch. When that happens, the engine can stall or the bike can lose drive power while you are riding. A dealer will reprogram the engine control software at no cost to you.

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your motorcycle is included. 2. Contact a Honda dealer or Honda customer service at 1-866-784-1870 about recall KNB. 3. Have the dealer update the engine control software — it is free.

Summary
Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2020-2021 CRF1100 Africa Twin motorcycles equipped with a dual-clutch transmission (DCT). A software error in the engine control unit (ECU), may disconnect the controller area network (CAN) communication and release the clutch, which can result in an engine stall or a loss of drive power.
Safety risk
An engine stall or a loss of drive power can increase the risk of a crash or injury.
Remedy
Dealers will update the ECU software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 6, 2022. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-866-784-1870. Honda's number for this recall is KNB.
