In a crash, the seat backrest may not fully lock, increasing the risk of injury. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

On some X7s with a third row, small springs that lock the seat back upright may not have been put in correctly, and one could slip out or fall off entirely. If that happens, the third-row seat back may not latch firmly, so it might not hold as it should in a crash. Dealers will check the third-row seat and reinstall any springs that were fitted wrong or add ones that are missing, free of charge.

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see whether your X7 is included.
2. Schedule a free third-row seat inspection and repair at a BMW dealer.
3. Call BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 if you need help arranging the appointment.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2019-2022 BMW X7 xDrive40i, X7 Drive50i, X7 M50i vehicles with third-row seats. One or more of the compression springs that lock the backrest may not have been installed properly, and could dislodge or detach.
Safety risk
In a crash, the seat backrest may not fully lock, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect the third-row seat and, if necessary, remove and reinstall improperly installed compression springs, and reinstall any missing springs, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 4, 2022. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
