Kia Forte steering part may crack and fail

NHTSA campaign 22V906000 · Reported 2022-12-08 · Kia America, Inc.

critical How serious is it? About this label

Very serious: losing steering control can happen without warning and raises the risk of a crash, and although Kia has not issued a do-not-drive order, you should have the car inspected as soon as you can.

What's wrong, in plain English

A part in the front left suspension called the steering knuckle — it connects the wheel to the steering — may have been made wrong and can crack. If it cracks, you can lose the ability to steer the car. Kia says this came from a mistake during manufacturing. A dealer will look at the part on your car and put in a new one if it is cracked or faulty. The inspection and any replacement cost you nothing.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your Forte is affected.
2. Contact your Kia dealer to book the steering knuckle inspection, or call Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 and reference recall SC259.
3. Have the part inspected and replaced if needed — the repair is free.
