What's wrong, in plain English

The relay that switches on the starter motor has a housing that may have been made incorrectly. A faulty housing can damage the relay, and a damaged relay can get very hot. An overheating electrical part on the motorcycle creates a fire risk. Dealers will fit a new starter relay and load updated software, both at no cost to you. BMW mailed letters to owners on September 23, 2024.

3. Have the starter relay replaced and the software updated; both are free.

Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2024 R 1300 GS motorcycles. The housing for the starter motor relay may have been manufactured incorrectly, which can result in a damaged relay that can overheat.
Safety risk: An overheated electrical relay increases the risk of a fire.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the starter relay and update the software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 23, 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
