The 2.0-liter engine in these cars has piston rings that may not have been hardened correctly when they were made. Over time the rings can wear, damage the engine, and let oil escape. Hyundai is also adding software that listens for piston ring noise so trouble can be caught early. A badly damaged engine can shut off while you are driving, and leaking oil can drip onto hot exhaust parts and start a fire. A dealer will check the engine and replace it if needed.

On some 2019 Hyundai Veloster cars, the latch that holds the driver's door shut, along with its locking cable, can be damaged in a side-impact crash. If that happens, the driver's door can pop open during the crash instead of staying shut. A door that opens in a crash can let someone be thrown out of the car or leave them less protected. A dealer will replace the driver's door latch and the lower channel part at no charge.
