BMW M5 software fault can stall the engine

NHTSA campaign 18V323000 · Reported 2018-05-16 · BMW of North America, LLC

critical How serious is it? About this label

Serious, because the car can stall while you are driving and a stall in traffic can lead to a crash; BMW has not told owners to stop driving, but get the software updated right away.

What's wrong, in plain English

On certain 2018 BMW M5 cars, a software problem in the computer that runs the engine can shut off the fuel pump while you are driving. With no fuel reaching the engine, the car stops running and loses power out on the road, which can leave you stranded in traffic. BMW says that raises the risk of a crash. A dealer will reprogram the engine computer with corrected software at no charge.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your M5 is included. 2. Contact your BMW dealer or BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 to schedule the engine computer software update. 3. The update is free and is usually a same-visit job, so book it as soon as a slot is open.
