MINI Countryman missing fuel pump crash protection plate

NHTSA campaign 18V557000 · Reported 2018-08-23 · BMW of North America, LLC

high How serious is it? About this label

The fire risk only comes up in a crash, but it is a real fire hazard, and the notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

These vehicles may be missing a metal plate that protects the high pressure fuel pump in a crash. Without it, the pump can be damaged if you are in a collision, and fuel can leak out. Leaking fuel near a hot engine can catch fire, which is dangerous for anyone in or near the car. The dealer will install the missing protection plate at no cost. MINI sent an early letter to owners and will send a second one once the repair parts are ready.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your MINI is included. 2. Contact your MINI dealer or MINI customer service at 1-866-825-1525 to ask whether repair parts are available. 3. Have the crash protection plate installed once parts are ready — the repair is free.
