Serious, because losing drive power in traffic can lead to a crash, but the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, so you can keep driving while you get the free repair scheduled promptly.

What's wrong, in plain English

Your Prius C has a part that takes power from the big hybrid battery and uses it to charge the small 12-volt battery that runs the car's electronics. On some of these cars that part can fail. When it does, the small battery stops getting charged, and the car can lose the ability to drive, possibly while you are out on the road. Toyota is replacing the part free of charge.

What you should do

2. Call any Toyota dealer to book the repair, or Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371 with questions.
3. Have the dealer replace the DC-DC converter; the repair is free.

Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Prius C vehicles. The DC-DC converter may fail resulting in the auxiliary battery no longer receiving power from the converter, which may cause a loss of drive.
Safety risk: A loss of drive increases the risk of crash.
Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the DC-DC converter with a new one, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began August 23, 2019. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's number for this recall is K0K.
