Ford Explorer wiring can rub through and cause fire

NHTSA campaign 19V687000 · Reported 2019-09-30 · Ford Motor Company

critical How serious is it? About this label

Anything that can start a fire is serious, and while the notice does not tell owners to stop driving or park outside, this is one to get repaired as soon as you can.

What's wrong, in plain English

On certain 2020 Explorers with the 2.3L or 3.3L engine, a bundle of electrical wires may not have been tied down properly. It can rub against the spinning air conditioning pulley and wear through the wire insulation. If a bare wire then touches the main battery wire, it can short out and start a fire. A dealer will add a strap to hold the wiring safely in place, free of charge. The recall began October 21, 2019.

What you should do

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Explorer is covered. 2. Call your Ford dealer, or Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 (recall 19S32), and book the appointment. 3. Have the tie strap installed — there is no charge.
