Inside the steering column, the shaft that runs from your steering wheel down to the steering gear, there is a plate that holds a bearing in place. On these vehicles that plate may not have been attached correctly, so it can work loose. A loose plate can change how the steering feels and responds, making the vehicle harder to control. BMW says it telephoned every owner and all affected vehicles have already been repaired, so no notification letters were sent out.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm whether your vehicle was covered and already repaired.
2. If your VIN still shows an open recall, book a free inspection at a BMW dealer.
3. Contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 to confirm your vehicle's repair status.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2019-2020 X5 sDrive40i, X5 xDrive40i and X5 xDrive50i vehicles and 2020 X6M vehicles. The steering column shaft bearing plate may not have been properly attached to the vehicle, allowing it to loosen.
Safety risk
A loose bearing plate can affect the vehicle's handling and control, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the steering column shaft bearing plate and properly attach or replace it, as necessary, free of charge.
