Why do so many BMW models have steering recalls?
Ten BMW steering recalls split into three repeating patterns. Tie rods lead: misassembled steering gear tie rods on 2018-2019 X1, 2019 X2 and MINI Cooper S Convertible/Countryman, plus tie rods damaged by heat and rough roads on 2019 Z4, 2019-2020 330i xDrive and M340i, 2020 X3M and X4M, and the Toyota Supra built with them. Second, steering rack pinion teeth that break under load on 2020 X5, X7, X3 M40i and X4 M40i. Third, fasteners left loose: steering gears on 2024 2 Series, 330i, X3 and X4; column bolts on 2021 X5, X6 and X7; a bearing plate on 2019-2020 X5; a steering spindle on 2024-2026 X3. The X3 appears most often, including a 2025-2026 software recall; riders have a separate M 1000 XR/R steering damper recall.
Warning signs to watch for
- Steering that feels loose, vague or unusual, or play in the steering wheel
- A sudden, unexpected increase in steering effort on M 1000 XR and R motorcycles
- The steering wheel rotating on its own while a 2025-2026 X3 is parked
- Several notices describe no warning at all — a tie rod, rack tooth or loose bolt can fail suddenly
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these ten notices tells owners to stop driving or park the vehicle outside, so you may keep using it while you arrange the free repair. BMW and NHTSA still treat them as urgent: a broken tie rod, broken rack teeth or a loosened steering gear can take away control with little or no warning. Get the car booked in quickly, and sooner still if the steering feels loose or unusual. On the M 1000 XR and R, riders are not told to stop riding, but repair before long or fast rides.
What the free repair involves
Repairs vary by campaign. Dealers replace tie rods and ball joints, complete steering racks or steering gears, the steering column shaft, universal joint and bolt, the column bearing plate, or the steering spindle and column — inspecting first on several of them. The motorcycle recall replaces the steering damper, and the 2025-2026 X3 rotation issue is a steering software update done over-the-air or at a dealer. All free of charge.

Common questions
Why is a Toyota Supra included in a BMW steering recall?
The 2020 Supra was built alongside the BMW Z4, 330i xDrive, M340i, X3M and X4M covered by the same tie rod defect. Dealers replace the steering gear tie rods free; Supra owners contact Toyota customer service, BMW owners call 1-800-525-7417.
My X3 shows up on this list more than once — why?
They are separate defects: rack pinion teeth on the 2020 X3 M40i, tie rods on the 2020 X3M, an untightened steering gear on the 2024 X3, the spindle-to-column attachment on 2024-2026 X3, and unexpected steering wheel rotation on 2025-2026 X3. Each needs its own repair.
Does the steering wheel movement recall require a dealer appointment?
Not necessarily. BMW says the steering system software will be updated free of charge either over-the-air or by a dealer. Owner notification letters for that 2025-2026 X3 recall were mailed February 6, 2026; BMW customer service can confirm which route applies to your car.
