Losing steering control is serious; the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, but get it inspected right away, especially if the steering feels loose or unusual.

What's wrong, in plain English

The shaft that connects your steering wheel to the steering gear has a joint held by a bolt. On these vehicles the bolt may not have been tightened enough at the factory, so the connection can work loose. If it does, the steering can feel sloppy or vague and you may not be able to control the vehicle the way you expect. Dealers will inspect it and replace or properly tighten the bolt, or replace the whole shaft and joint.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your vehicle is covered.
2. Contact a BMW dealer or BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 to schedule the inspection.
3. Have the bolt or steering shaft repaired — the work is free of charge.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2021 X5 sDrive40i, X5 xDrive40i, X5M, X5 xDrive45e, X6 sDrive40i, X6 xDrive40i, X7 xDrive40i, X7 M50i vehicles. The steering column shaft's universal joint connection may not have been tightened to specifications, and can become loose.
Safety risk
A loose steering column shaft universal joint connection can affect vehicle handling and control, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, depending upon the inspection, either the bolt will be replaced and tightened to specifications, or the steering column shaft, universal joint, and bolt will be replaced and tightened to specifications, free of charge. The recall began March 30, 2021. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
