Lincoln Aviator backup camera image may go blank

NHTSA campaign 21V223000 · Reported 2021-03-30 · Ford Motor Company

medium How serious is it? About this label

Moderate: Ford does not tell owners to stop driving, so you can keep driving, but back up slowly and check your mirrors and over your shoulder until the free software update is done.

What's wrong, in plain English

The part that handles video from the rear camera may stop sending a picture to the dashboard screen. When that happens, the screen is blank or the image is distorted while you back up. Federal rules require a working rear view, so the vehicle does not meet that standard. With no camera picture, you see less of what is behind you, which raises the chance of a crash. Dealers install updated software.

What you should do

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is covered.
2. Call a Lincoln dealer or Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and reference recall 21C09.
3. Have the dealer update the camera module software at no cost.

Summary
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Lincoln Aviator vehicles. The image processing module may be unable to provide video feed to the display, which could result in a loss of the backup camera image. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."
Safety risk
A backup camera that displays a blank or distorted image reduces the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the image processing module software with the latest level, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 21, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 21C09.

Verify your specific vehicle by VIN at nhtsa.gov. Recall repairs are free of charge by law.
