Ford Explorer and Lincoln SUVs lose rearview camera

NHTSA campaign 26V165000 · Reported 2026-03-19 · Ford Motor Company

medium How serious is it? About this label

Moderate — the vehicle still drives normally and Ford does not say to stop driving, but do not rely on the camera or the assist features until the update is done; check mirrors and look over your shoulder.

What's wrong, in plain English

A computer module that handles the camera images can restart itself over and over without warning. When it does, you lose the backup camera picture on your screen, along with driver-assist features: the pre-collision system, lane-keeping help, and blind-spot monitoring. Those features may not be working when you expect them, which makes it harder to spot a hazard around you. The fix is a free software update, done either at the dealer or sent to the vehicle over the air.

What you should do

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls (VINs for this recall became searchable March 25, 2026). 2. Accept the over-the-air update if your vehicle offers one, or book a Ford or Lincoln dealer to load the software. 3. It is free; if your model is in a later phase, call Ford at 1-866-436-7332 (recall 26S21) to ask when yours is due.
