Toyota Yaris fuel pump can fail and stall engine

NHTSA campaign 21V617000 · Reported 2021-09-27 · Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing

high How serious is it? About this label

An engine that stalls unexpectedly, especially in traffic or at speed, increases the risk of a crash, so schedule the repair soon; the notice does not instruct owners to stop driving the vehicle.

What's wrong, in plain English

A small spinning part inside the low-pressure fuel pump in these Yaris models can crack and change shape. If that happens, the pump may stop delivering fuel to the engine properly and fail. When the pump fails, the engine can stall — it simply quits running, which may happen while you are driving. Dealers will replace the entire low-pressure fuel pump assembly at no cost to the owner.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Yaris is covered. 2. Call your Toyota dealer or Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 (recall 21TB05 or 21TA05) to book the free fuel pump replacement. 3. If the engine ever sputters, runs roughly, or stalls, get the car off the road safely and have it towed to the dealer.
