Not being able to switch on your brights when you expect to means less visibility at night and a higher chance of a crash, but the notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

These Jeep Grand Cherokee L models were built without automatic high beams, but the headlight switch still has an "auto" setting. If you leave the switch on auto and reach for the high beams, nothing happens. You first have to turn the switch to the "on" position before the brights will come on. That is not how headlights are required to work, so the dealer will reprogram the vehicle.

Summary
Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L vehicles not equipped with automatic high beams. When the master lighting switch is set to the auto position, the high beam headlights will not activate unless the master lighting switch is first changed to the 'on" position. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
Safety risk
Difficulty activating the headlight high beams may result in reduced visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will reprogram the vehicles, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 28, 2021. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is Y66.
