GM full-size SUVs: rear driveshaft may break

NHTSA campaign 22V036000 · Reported 2022-01-27 · General Motors, LLC

high How serious is it? About this label

Serious, because the vehicle can lose power suddenly and without warning while you are driving; the notice does not tell you to park it, but schedule the repair soon.

What's wrong, in plain English

The rear driveshaft is the spinning bar that carries power from the transmission back to the rear wheels. Inside some of these driveshafts, parts were not heat-treated correctly, which leaves them weaker than they should be. A weak driveshaft can break while you are driving, and when it does the vehicle suddenly stops pulling and loses drive power, possibly in traffic or at highway speed. Dealers replace the left and/or right rear driveshaft assembly.
