What's wrong, in plain English

On certain 2015-2021 Subaru WRX cars, the switch that tells the car you have shifted into reverse can corrode and stop working. When it fails, the white backup lights at the rear do not come on, and the backup camera picture does not appear on the screen. That leaves you with a poorer view behind the car, and people walking or driving nearby get no light telling them you are reversing, so a crash is more likely.

What you should do

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your WRX is included.
2. Call your Subaru dealer, or Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614, and ask about recall WRE-22.
3. Have the dealer inspect the backup light switch and replace it if needed, free of charge.

Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2015-2021 WRX vehicles. The backup light switch may corrode and become inoperative, which can result in the backup lights not illuminating and the rearview camera image not displaying when the vehicle is in reverse.
Safety risk: Inoperative backup lights and an inoperative rearview camera can reduce vehicle visibility and driver awareness, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will inspect and replace the backup light switch, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 16, 2022. Owners may contact Subaru's customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WRE-22.
