Ford Maverick brake lights can turn on by themselves

NHTSA campaign 22V730000 · Reported 2022-09-30 · Ford Motor Company

medium How serious is it? About this label

Unintended illumination of the brake lights may confuse other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

On certain 2022 Mavericks, the computer that runs the anti-lock brakes can switch the brake lights on even when you are not pressing the brake pedal. Drivers behind you may think you are slowing down when you are not, and that confusion can lead to a crash. A dealer will reprogram that computer with updated software, free of charge. Ford mailed owner notification letters on November 9, 2022.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Maverick is affected. 2. Call your Ford dealer, or Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 (recall 22C24), to book the update. 3. Have the software updated — it costs you nothing.
