Volvo steering gear screw can lock the steering wheel
critical How serious is it? About this label
This is serious because the steering can seize with no warning; the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, but you should get this fixed as soon as a dealer can take the car.
What's wrong, in plain English
When the steering gear was put together at the factory, two screws may have been stacked on top of each other. If that happened, one screw can come loose and drop down inside the steering gear housing. A loose screw in there can jam the parts that turn your front wheels, and the steering wheel can lock up without warning while you are driving. Volvo dealers will replace the entire steering gear unit on affected vehicles.
What you should do
2. Call your Volvo dealer or Volvo customer service at 1-800-458-1552 and ask for the earliest appointment for the steering gear replacement.
3. Have the repair done — the new steering gear and the labor are free, and report any steering stiffness or noise to the dealer right away.
