Nothing will feel wrong day to day and the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, but the seat may not protect you properly in a crash, so book the repair.

What's wrong, in plain English

The metal frame of a seat may not have been welded properly to the rails it sits on — the rails are what bolt the seat to the floor and let it slide. A badly welded frame may not hold a person in place in a crash, so you could be hurt more badly in a crash. Dealers will replace the seat frame and the seat back free of charge.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your BMW is affected.
2. Call a BMW dealer or BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 to schedule the work.
3. Have the seat frame and back rest replaced — there is no charge.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2019-2021 330i, 330i xDrive, M340i xDrive, 2020-2021 X3 sDrive30i, X3 xDrive30i, X3 M40i, X3M, 2021 X3 xDrive30e, X4 xDrive30i, and X4M vehicles. The seat frame may not have been welded properly to the seat rails.
Safety risk
An improperly welded seat frame may not properly restrain the occupant during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the seat frame and back rest, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 22, 2023. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
