BMW X7 and XM exhaust bolts may be loose

NHTSA campaign 23V294000 · Reported 2023-04-26 · BMW of North America, LLC

critical How serious is it? About this label

This is a fire risk, so while BMW has not told owners to stop driving or park outside, you should get it inspected as soon as a dealer can take the car.

What's wrong, in plain English

The bolts that hold the exhaust pipe to the catalytic converter — the part that cleans exhaust gases — may not have been tightened enough at the factory. If that joint works loose, very hot exhaust gas can escape where it shouldn't, right next to other parts under the car. BMW says a loose connection there raises the chance of a fire. The dealer will fit a new gasket at the joint and tighten the bolts properly, at no cost to you.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your car is included. 2. Call your BMW dealer, or BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417, and mention recall 23V294000. 3. Have the gasket replaced and the fasteners tightened — the repair is free.
