Which BMW engine recalls are fire and stall risks?
Fire risk is the thread running through BMW's engine-area recalls. The largest covers water pumps that can short-circuit, and it reaches across a decade of models — 2012-2015 X1 sDrive28i and xDrive28i, 2012-2016 Z4 sDrive28i, 328i and 528i, 2013-2017 X3, 2015-2018 X4 xDrive28i, 2016-2018 X5 xDrive40e and 2014-2016 228i and 428i. The 2023 X7 M60i and XM recall is narrower: fasteners joining the exhaust system to the catalytic converter were not tightened correctly. The other two are isolated build or software faults — a crankshaft sensor with incorrect firmware that can stall the car, tied to 2018 540d xDrive along with M240i, X1, X2 and 2019 MINI models, and a single unsold 2019 F850GS motorcycle with improperly installed connecting rods.
Warning signs to watch for
- A sudden engine stall or loss of power while driving, from the crankshaft sensor fault.
- Smoke, burning smell, or heat from the engine bay — the fire risk these notices describe.
- On an F850GS, engine noise or loss of power from loose connecting rods (that bike was never delivered).
- For the exhaust fastener and water pump recalls, the notices describe no warning sign you would reliably notice first.
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these four recalls carries a stop-driving or park-outside instruction from BMW or NHTSA. Even so, the exhaust-fastener recall on the 2023 X7 M60i and XM and the water pump recall are both fire risks, and the notices say to get the vehicle inspected as soon as a dealer can take it. The crankshaft sensor repair should not be put off either, since a sudden stall raises crash risk. The single 2019 F850GS was never sold, so no rider is exposed — the dealer replaces its engine before delivery.
What the free repair involves
Repairs differ by recall and every one is free. On the X7 M60i and XM, dealers replace the gasket between the exhaust system and the catalytic converter and tighten the fasteners. For the water pump recall, they inspect and replace the water pump and plug connector as necessary and install a protective shield. The crankshaft sensor is replaced outright, and the unsold F850GS gets a new engine.

My X7 or XM isn't under a park-outside order — how urgent is the exhaust repair?
BMW has not told owners to stop driving or park outside. But loose fasteners between the exhaust and catalytic converter are a fire risk, and the notice says to have the vehicle inspected as soon as a dealer can take the car.
Why does the water pump recall list so many different BMW models?
The same water pump and plug connector were fitted across many models built between 2012 and 2018 — X1, X3, X4, X5 xDrive40e, Z4, 228i, 328i, 428i and 528i among them. One shared part produces one very wide recall.
Does the crankshaft sensor recall cover MINI as well as BMW?
