This is very serious because steering can be lost suddenly and with no warning, which can cause a crash; the notice does not order owners to park the vehicle, but you should get it inspected right away.

What's wrong, in plain English

The steering column intermediate shaft is the metal link that carries your turning of the steering wheel down toward the front wheels. On some 2022-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2021-2023 Grand Cherokee L vehicles, this shaft was put together incorrectly and can disconnect at its joint. If that happens, turning the steering wheel no longer steers the vehicle. Dealers will inspect the shaft and, if needed, replace it and the parts that hold it together.

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2021-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L vehicles. An incorrectly assembled steering column intermediate shaft may disconnect from the u-joint, and result in a loss of steering control.
Safety risk
A loss of steering control increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the intermediate shaft and assembly parts, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 6, 2023. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is 58A.
