BMW X5, X6, X7 and XM Knee Airbags May Not Deploy

NHTSA campaign 23V471000 · Reported 2023-07-10 · BMW of North America, LLC

medium How serious is it? About this label

A knee air bag that does not deploy as intended increases the risk of injury. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

The knee airbag on the driver's side, the passenger's side, or both may not have been built correctly. Knee airbags sit low in the dashboard and are meant to open in a crash to keep your legs and lower body from being thrown forward. One that was not made properly may fail to open the way it should, so you could be hurt more badly in a crash. Dealers will replace the affected knee airbag free of charge.
