Why so many BMW airbag recalls, and is yours affected?
Fourteen BMW airbag recalls, and nearly all trace back to how a part was built, folded or installed. Knee airbags are the biggest cluster: improperly folded modules on 2019-2020 2 Series and 4 Series including the M4, and incorrectly manufactured knee airbags on the 2023 XM and 2024 X5, X6 and X7, recalled twice in 2023. The X3 and X4 recur constantly, from 2018-2019 instrument panels and occupant classification seat foam to 2025 X3 passenger airbag fabric damaged in shipping and a wrongly assembled curtain airbag gas generator. The 2022-2023 iX brings a driver airbag defect plus software that may not light the airbag warning, and 2020 X1, X2 and MINI models share a faulty airbag control unit.
Warning signs to watch for
- Usually nothing at all, the vehicle drives normally and the fault only shows up in a crash
- Airbag warning light illuminated, or on the 2022-2023 iX, a warning light that fails to come on when a fault exists
- Front passenger seat read as unoccupied with an adult sitting there, on 2018-2019 X3 and X4 models
- Head airbag trim on the 2019 X7 looks misaligned where the airbag meets the headliner trim
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these fourteen recalls carries a stop-driving order and none asks you to park outside. Each one affects how well you are protected in a crash rather than how the vehicle drives, so BMW's guidance is to keep driving and book the free repair. The one place to go further is the 2018-2019 X3 and X4 occupant classification recall, where the passenger seat may be misclassified as empty; consider leaving that seat unoccupied until the seat foam is replaced. Several of these vehicles were never sold and sit in dealer inventory.
What the free repair involves
The repair depends on the part and all of it is free. Dealers replace instrument panel assemblies, driver, passenger, knee and head curtain airbags, the airbag control unit, and the seat foam containing the occupant classification system. They also reinstall misaligned head airbags, repair the X4 inner-left roof frame, and reprogram software on the iX and the 4 Series Convertible. Nothing here is delivered over the air.

Common questions
My knee airbag was already replaced in 2023. Do I need a second repair?
The 2023 XM and 2024 X5, X6 and X7 appear in two separate knee airbag recalls, one announced in July 2023 and one in September 2023 covering the front passenger knee airbag. Check both against your VIN with a BMW dealer.
How can I tell whether my iX airbag warning light works?
You cannot tell from the driver's seat, which is exactly the defect. On 2022-2023 iX models, the airbag malfunction light and display message may not appear when there is an airbag or pedestrian protection fault. Dealers reprogram the control unit free of charge.
My 2025 X3 has not been delivered yet. Will I get a letter?
Probably not. For the 2025 X3 passenger airbag fabric and right-side curtain airbag recalls, the affected vehicles had not been sold, so no owner notification letters were mailed. Dealers handle them before sale; confirm with BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
