This is serious — losing drive power in traffic can cause a crash, and the battery can also catch fire — so even though the notice does not tell you to stop driving, have it checked as soon as possible.

What's wrong, in plain English

These are plug-in hybrids, and one or more cells inside the large high-voltage battery may have been built wrong. A bad cell can short out inside the battery and cause the whole battery to fail. If that happens the vehicle can lose power while you are driving, and there is also a fire risk. Your dealer will run a computer test on the battery control module and replace the whole battery pack if the test shows a problem, free of charge.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is included. 2. Call your Ford or Lincoln dealer, or Ford at 1-866-436-7332 (recall 23S53), and ask for the battery diagnostic test. 3. Have the battery pack replaced if the test calls for it — the work is free.

Summary
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2020-2022 Lincoln Aviator and Ford Explorer vehicles equipped with 3.0L PHEV engines. A manufacturing defect in one or more of the high voltage battery cells may result in an internal short circuit and battery failure.
Safety risk
Battery failure can cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash. Battery failure can also increase the risk of a fire.
Remedy
Dealers will perform a Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) diagnostic test and replace the high voltage battery pack, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on April 8, 2024. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford Motor Company's number for this recall is 23S53.
