Serious — a car that rolls away on its own can cause a crash or injure someone nearby, and while Kia does not tell owners to stop driving, you should always set the parking brake until the software is updated.

What's wrong, in plain English

The part inside the transmission that holds your car still when you shift into Park can get damaged. If that happens, the car may roll on its own even though the shifter says "P" — especially if you did not set the parking brake and the car is still powered on. The fix is new software for the car's computer. If your car was already repaired under the earlier recall, it still needs this newer fix.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is included.
2. Call your Kia dealer or Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 (recall SC287) and schedule the software update — it is free, even if you already had the 20V-389 repair done.
3. Until it is fixed, always set the parking brake before you get out of the vehicle.

Summary
Kia America, Inc. (KIA) is recalling certain 2015-2019 Soul EV vehicles. The parking mechanism may be damaged, which can result in unintended vehicle movement when the gear shift lever is in the Park 'P' position and the parking brake is not applied while the vehicle is powered on.
Safety risk
Unintended vehicle movement can increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will update the electronic control unit software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 21, 2023. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC287. This recall expands and replaces recall number 20V-389. Vehicles previously repaired under 20V-389 will need to have the new remedy completed.
