Ford Focus and EcoSport oil pump belt can fail

NHTSA campaign 23V905000 · Reported 2023-12-22 · Ford Motor Company

high How serious is it? About this label

Serious — an engine that quits without warning and a suddenly hard brake pedal raise the risk of a crash, so get it repaired promptly, though the notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

The belt that drives the engine's oil pump, or the part that keeps that belt tight, can break. Without that belt, oil stops circulating through the engine. The engine can shut off while you are driving, and once it does, the power assist for your brakes goes away, so the brake pedal gets much harder to push. Ford dealers will put in a new belt and tensioner at no cost, and will replace the whole engine free if the broken belt already ruined it.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is included (Ford's recall number is 23S64).
2. Call any Ford dealer, or Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332, and schedule the repair.
3. The new oil pump belt and tensioner — and a replacement engine if yours was already damaged — are free, parts and labor.

Summary
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Ford Focus and 2018-2022 Ford EcoSport vehicles. The oil pump drive belt or drive belt tensioner may fail, resulting in a loss of engine oil pressure.
Safety risk
A loss of oil pressure can result in an engine stall and a loss of power braking assist, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the oil pump tensioner assembly and oil pump drive belt, free of charge. If engine failure occurs due to a damaged oil pump belt and/or oil pump belt tensioner, Ford has authorized dealers to replace the engine assembly as an interim repair before the availability of remedy parts for the final repair. This repair will be free of charge (parts and labor). Owner notification letters were mailed August 11, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.
