This is serious because a water-damaged battery can start a fire or stall the car, and while the notice does not tell you to stop driving or park outside, you should get it inspected as soon as possible.

What's wrong, in plain English

The big battery pack under your electric MINI has a housing that may not have been sealed correctly at the factory. Water can get inside it. A battery with water damage can catch fire, or it can make the car suddenly stall while you are driving. BMW already sent an early warning letter about this safety risk in June 2024, followed by the full notice in October 2024. A dealer will inspect the battery, run a leak test, and fix or replace it if needed.

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your MINI is included.
2. Call your MINI dealer or BMW customer service at 1-866-825-1525 to schedule the battery inspection and leak test.
3. Have the work done — the inspection and any battery repair are free of charge.

Summary
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020-2024 MINI Hardtop 2 Door (Cooper SE) vehicles. The high voltage battery housing may not have been sealed properly, allowing water to enter the battery.
Safety risk
A high voltage battery with water damage can cause a fire or a vehicle stall, increasing the risk of injury or a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and leak test the high voltage battery, and repair the battery as necessary, free of charge. Letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed June 28, 2024. Owner notification letters were mailed October 30, 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-866-825-1525.
