This is a fire risk that can cause injury; there is no park-it order, but you should stop driving and shut the engine off right away if you hear odd noises, lose power, or see smoke.

What's wrong, in plain English

These Explorers were built with the Police Interceptor Utility package. If the engine fails, engine oil and fuel vapor can escape into the engine bay and collect near hot parts such as the engine or exhaust. That can set off a fire under the hood. Ford says that if you hear unexpected engine noises, suddenly lose engine power, or see smoke from the engine compartment, you should pull over and shut the engine off as soon as you safely can.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your Explorer is covered.
2. Contact your Ford dealer or Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 (recall 24S52) to schedule the work.
3. The dealer will update the engine computer software and inspect for rod bearing failure, replacing the engine long block if needed — all free of charge.

Summary
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2020-2022 Explorer vehicles equipped with the Police Interceptor Utility Package. In the event of an engine failure, engine oil and fuel vapor may be released into the engine compartment and accumulate near ignition sources such as hot engine or exhaust components, possibly resulting in an engine compartment fire.
Safety risk
An engine compartment fire increases the risk of injury.
Remedy
Owners are advised to park and shut off the engine as promptly as possible upon hearing unexpected engine noises, or after experiencing an unexpected engine power reduction, or seeing smoke from the engine compartment. Dealers will update the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software. In addition, dealers will inspect for connecting rod bearing failure and if necessary, replace the engine long block. All inspections and repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 15, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.
