Honda Gold Wing: engine bolt may break, locking rear wheel

NHTSA campaign 24V820000 · Reported 2024-10-31 · Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)

critical How serious is it? About this label

Very serious, because the engine can quit and the rear wheel can lock while you are riding; the notice does not tell owners to stop riding, but this repair should not wait.

What's wrong, in plain English

Inside the engine of these Gold Wing motorcycles, the bolt that holds the main drive gear onto the crankshaft can snap. If it breaks, the engine can stall and the rear wheel can lock up. On a motorcycle, a rear wheel that suddenly stops turning can put you on the ground, and it can happen while you are riding. Honda mailed owner letters on December 30, 2024. A dealer will install a new primary drive gear bolt for free.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your Gold Wing is included.
2. Contact a Honda motorcycle dealer or Honda customer service at 1-866-784-1870 and give them recall number KQ9.
3. Schedule the free bolt replacement as soon as you can.
