This is serious because the engine can quit without warning and the car can roll away when parked; the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, but until it is fixed, always set the parking brake when you park.

What's wrong, in plain English

On certain 2025 Explorer vehicles, the main engine computer can reset itself while you are driving. That reset can damage the park system or make the engine shut off. If the park system is damaged, the vehicle may roll away after you shift into park without setting the parking brake. If the engine shuts off while you are driving, you can suddenly lose engine power. A dealer will update the engine computer software to fix both problems.

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your Explorer is included. 2. Contact your Ford dealer or Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 (recall 25S35) and book the software update. 3. Have the powertrain control module software updated — the repair is free.

Safety risk
A damaged park system can result in a vehicle rollaway when the vehicle is placed in park without the parking brake applied. An engine stall while driving can result in a sudden loss of drive power. Either of these scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will update the powertrain control module software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 6, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 25S35.
