Ford Explorer connecting rods may fail, causing engine stall

NHTSA campaign 25V344000 · Reported 2025-06-13 · Ford Motor Company

high How serious is it? About this label

A damaged engine can result in engine failure and a stall, increasing the risk of a crash. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

Some parts deep inside the engine — the connecting rods and their bearings — may have been made wrong. Over time those flawed parts can damage the engine, and the engine can fail while you are driving. If that happens, the vehicle can lose power and stall, possibly in traffic or at highway speed. The dealer will inspect the connecting rods and, if there is a problem, replace the main engine assembly at no cost to you.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your Explorer falls under campaign 25V344000 (Ford's number 25S55).
2. Contact your Ford dealer, or Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332, to schedule the connecting rod inspection.
3. Have the inspection done and, if the parts are bad, the engine replaced — all free of charge.
