This is serious — the notice does not say to park the vehicle, but losing power in traffic or an under-hood fire are both dangerous, so get the software update right away and stop driving if you see warning lights, smoke, or smell burning.

What's wrong, in plain English

Leftover debris inside the engine can damage it and make the engine quit. If that happens, the vehicle can lose power while you are driving, and in some cases a fire can start under the hood. Dealers will load a software update now, and will replace the engine block or the whole engine if it is needed. Chrysler has started mailing owner letters, and more letters will go out when the full fix is ready.

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls (these VINs became searchable November 13, 2025).
2. Contact your Jeep dealer or Chrysler customer service at 800-853-1403 and reference recall 78C.
3. Get the software update now, and watch for the follow-up letter about the final engine repair — all of it is free.

Summary
Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2023-2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4XE and 2024-2025 Jeep Wrangler 4XE Plug-In Hybrid Electric (PHEV) vehicles. Debris inside the engine may cause engine failure, which can result in a loss of drive power and/or an engine compartment fire.
Safety risk
A loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash, and a vehicle fire can increase the risk of injury.
Remedy
Dealers will install a software update and replace the block or engine as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed beginning May 7, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is 78C. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning November 13, 2025.
