The airbag control unit is the small computer that decides when to set off your airbags. On these cars, the unit's cover can rub against a memory chip on the circuit board inside and damage the electrical circuit. If that circuit is damaged, the airbags can shut off and will not inflate in a crash. A dealer will inspect the unit and either update its software or replace it, whichever is needed. Owner letters went out in March 2022.
On some 2020 Kia Sedonas, the nut that holds the main positive battery cable onto the alternator may not have been tightened enough at the factory, so it can work loose over time. A loose connection carrying that much electrical current can spark and arc, and that arcing can start a fire in the engine compartment. A Kia dealer will inspect the nut and tighten it properly, free of charge. The repair itself is simple and quick.
On some 2019 Kia Sedona vans with 8-passenger seating, the seat belt buckle for the middle seat in the second row was installed on the wrong side of the seat. When it is on the wrong side, the three-point belt cannot be buckled and worn the way it is meant to be, so anyone sitting there is not properly protected. Dealers will check the buckle and move it to the correct side at no charge. Owners were notified starting April 8, 2019.
Certain 2015-2018 Kia Sedona vans with a manually adjusted front passenger seat have a wiring problem. Under the seat is a wire bundle for the system that senses whether someone is sitting there. Every time someone sits in the seat, that wiring can be stressed, and over time it can break. When the wire is broken, the van can no longer tell that a small child is in the seat, so the passenger airbag is not switched off as it should be.
Some 2015-2018 Kia Sedona minivans have a power sliding side door that may not reopen when something is in its path. The door is supposed to sense an obstruction while closing and back off on its own. If it does not, it can keep closing on a person standing in the doorway and injure them. The fix is updated software for the unit that controls the sliding door, which your dealer loads into the vehicle at no cost.
