What's wrong, in plain English

Some 2015-2018 Kia Sedona minivans have a power sliding side door that may not reopen when something is in its path. The door is supposed to sense an obstruction while closing and back off on its own. If it does not, it can keep closing on a person standing in the doorway and injure them. The fix is updated software for the unit that controls the sliding door, which your dealer loads into the vehicle at no cost.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls for campaign 18V338000 (Kia's number is SC164).
2. Contact your Kia dealer, or Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542, to arrange the software update.
3. Have the sliding door module reprogrammed — it is free.
4. Until then, watch children and hands near the closing door.

Summary: Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Kia Sedona vehicles equipped with a power sliding door (PSD). The PSD may not auto-reverse when its closing is obstructed.
Safety risk: If the door closes on an occupant, there is an increased risk of an injury.
Remedy: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the PSD module software, free of charge. The recall began on June 18, 2018. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC164.
