If a child is in a child seat in the front seat, a broken ODS wiring harness will not prevent the front passenger air bag from deploying in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury to the child. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

Certain 2015-2018 Kia Sedona vans with a manually adjusted front passenger seat have a wiring problem. Under the seat is a wire bundle for the system that senses whether someone is sitting there. Every time someone sits in the seat, that wiring can be stressed, and over time it can break. When the wire is broken, the van can no longer tell that a small child is in the seat, so the passenger airbag is not switched off as it should be.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Sedona is covered by this recall.
2. Call a Kia dealer to schedule the repair, or contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 and reference recall SC175.
3. Have the dealer remove the wire clip and, if the wiring is already damaged, replace the seat cushion — all free of charge.

Summary: Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Sedona vehicles equipped with manually-adjusted front passenger seats. Over time, the Occupant Detection System (ODS) wiring harness located underneath the front passenger seat may break from the seat being occupied.
Safety risk: If a child is in a child seat in the front seat, a broken ODS wiring harness will not prevent the front passenger air bag from deploying in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury to the child.
Remedy: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will remove the wire harness clip to prevent the wiring harness from breaking. If the harness is found damaged, the front passenger seat cushion will be replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 19, 2019. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC175.
