A stall can leave you without engine power in traffic and raises the risk of a crash, and although the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, you should get the free reprogramming done promptly.

What's wrong, in plain English

The computer that controls the automatic transmission on some 2019 Jeep Cherokees with the 2.4-liter engine was programmed with the wrong settings. Because of that bad programming, the engine can shut off on its own while you are driving. Nothing is broken or worn out, so no parts need to be replaced. The dealer simply connects a computer to your Cherokee and loads corrected software into the transmission controller, which takes care of the problem.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Cherokee is included in recall 18V739000.
2. Call a Jeep dealer and ask for recall UA9, or reach Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403.
3. Have the dealer reprogram the transmission controller — the repair is free.
